Apprentis d’Auteuil is an international charity which has been working for the benefits of youth, children and families in difficulty for 150 years now – discover how.

Apprentis d’Auteuil has just become 150 years old. Founded in 1866, our international charity for children has already helped about 30 thousand young people, children and families every year since the beginning. We celebrate this anniversary of helping youth with a book on sale since the 9th of March: History of Marginalised Youth from the 19th Century to the Present Day; but also with this article which retraces our history and our accomplishments on a worldwide level, from Europe to Africa.

History of a youth charity

In 1866, an extraordinary priest took on himself to care for children of the street in Paris: his name was Abbé Roussel, the founder of Apprentis d’Auteuil. He started helping youth who were abandoned and dropped out of school by providing them with an education, no matter their backgrounds. Soon, he was able to teach and shelter 200 children a year in his establishment in Auteuil – hence the name of our youth charity. Instead of being sent to juvenile prison, these young men received comprehensive support: vocational training and help for personal, intellectual and spiritual development.
Already in 1884, Abbé Roussel has stated his vision for a “cosmopolitan” center where they have received people from China and other countries. Step by step, Apprentis d’Auteuil has started to develop professional programs with the help of educators coming from foreign countries. In 1980, Father Gabriel David, a former missionary in Africa has laid out the foundations of an international charity organization by cooperating with associations from Congo and Cameroon.

How we work to help youth worldwide

During all the history of Apprentis d’Auteuil, our goal is to provide training to children and youth in difficulties and/or street situations. By giving a chance to young people continue their studies, we also ensure that they become important members of society. Besides our vocational trainings, and helping youth to become entrepreneurs, we also focus on developing social skills and supporting them psychologically.
Apprentis d’Auteuil is a youth charity which knows that childhood protection starts with the family. Parents in sensitive situations have a hard time caring for their children – if we help them, we help the whole family.
